Humewood Golf Course
Humewood is consistently ranked as one of South Africa's Top 10 golf courses. The late Bobby Locke considered Humewood Golf Course to be the best in South Africa and said that Humewood Golf Club was good enough to host The British Open should this Championship ever have to be played outside of Britain.Today, Humewood is still one of only a few genuine links courses found outside of Britain. Humewood has hosted the South African Amateur 9 times and the South African Open 4 times.
The Humewood Golf Course is surrounded by coastal bush and, although it is close to the centre of Port Elizabeth, one sees very little evidence of human encroachment. The fairways are wide and undulating in order to compensate for the strong prevailing south-easterly and westerly winds, but the rough that borders them is unforgiving. The holes are simple yet neat, however, golf is a game of skill and this beautifully manicured course makes no apologies to the average hacker. Most consider the par-four 13th the signature hole at The Humewood Golf Course and some golfers consider it the greatest par four in the world. The hole measures 408m of narrow rolling fairway to an elevated green hidden from sight by a sandy hill and hazards all around it. Abundant animal life is found including monkeys, small buck, tortoises, meerkats and plovers - also found on the club's emblem - locally better known as the "kiewietjie".
The course centres around the old, white walled, double storey Club House. After your round of golf, relax at the elegant Club House and indulge in a spectacular view over the links course itself as well as Algoa Bay. Before leaving though, one should take note of the hole-in-one trophies posted above the bar. This is just to remind you that the links of Humewood, can’t always be troublesome.
Drive along the N2 towards the city centre of Port Elizabeth. From there take the Summerstrand exit and continue onto Marine Drive and along the coastline. The Humewood Golf Club is situated immediately after the Holiday Inn Garden Court.
