Durban Country Club
A course steeped in tradition and history, Durban Country Club is situated in the city of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, only 1 kilometer north of Durban’s ‘golden mile’ beachfront. For more than 80 years, Durban Country Club has taken pride in providing its members with a range of exceptional facilities and amenities. This course, overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary and the Indian Ocean, host to 16 South African Opens in total - more than any other club in South Africa – is also the proud host of the centenary SA Open in December 2010.
The Durban Country Club is said to be one of the best golf courses in South Africa and is acknowledged to have the best third hole in the world. With its dense bush, indigenous trees and undulating fairways it is hard to believe that this spectacular championship course is actually situated in the centre of Durban. Extremely challenging to the most skilled golfer, the Durban Country Club course will be enjoyed, but rarely mastered. Elevated tees and greens are guarded by an array of tropical bushes, tall trees and large bunkers. This, together with the narrow fairways and steep slopes make for a challenging course. This is not a golf course where you come to learn the game of golf! The Durban Country Club is definitely geared towards the more experienced golfer. Situated along the shores of the Indian Ocean, this semi-links course has been carved into the dunes causing massive undulations in the fairways, especially the 5th, 8th and 17th. . The course is both scenic and demanding and strong onshore winds that blow through the valley don’t help.
Overlooking the course is the classic Cape Dutch style Club House. Its timeless grace has made the name Durban Country Club synonymous with relaxed elegance. Over the years, the Club has played host to celebrities, royalty and golfing greats. Photos, antiques and memorabilia in the club house bear testimony to its fine traditions. The clubhouse is surrounded by meticulously groomed lawns, a sparkling swimming pool, club amenities and a magnificent world renowned golf course.
